Normal Eastern Garter
NORMAL EASTERN GARTERS - This species varies immensely in colors and in size, depending on the locality that they are found. Easterns are the most common gartersnake in the US, found from southern Canada on south to Florida, all along the eastern seaboard and westward to east Texas and Minnesota. Top picture is of an eastern with a bold yellow dorsal stripe from Canada, bottom pic is of a small group that originated from West Virginia. (Many thanks to Ted Thompson at Susquehanna Ectotherms). In the wild they feed upon frogs, tadpoles, toads, salamanders, fish, leeches, worms, carrion, rodents and birds. In captivity they fare well on feeder fish, worms and/or rodents (see care sheet).
